PANpov: More Than a Day Off: Turning Federal Holidays into Days of Service

Federal holidays, such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth, and Presidents’ Day, are often viewed as opportunities to rest or catch up on errands. While rest matters, I believe these days offer a deeper purpose: a chance to show up for my community.

As a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated—the first historically Black sorority, founded in 1908 at Howard University—community service is deeply embedded in our mission. Our founders were trailblazers who understood that education, civic engagement, and sisterhood could transform lives. That legacy continues today through our international programs that focus on education, health, economic wealth-building, and social justice.

Locally, our chapter stays active year-round with a variety of initiatives designed to uplift and support vulnerable populations. Some of my most meaningful moments have come from volunteering at local homeless shelters, especially those serving women and children. It’s easy to forget how powerful a warm meal or clean clothing can be until you see firsthand how much it’s appreciated. These small interactions, though fleeting, stay with me and continue to fuel my commitment to service.

Outside of shelters, we also organize service projects, such as preparing snack bags and meal kits for children in our area. Through the Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (CHIPP™) program, our chapter works throughout the year to address food insecurity among school-aged children. Many of the kids we serve rely heavily on school-provided meals, and when school is out, their access to nutritious food can become limited. CHIPP™ helps fill that gap by providing pre-packed bags with shelf-stable snacks and simple meal options to carry them through weekends and holiday breaks. Each bag is thoughtfully assembled to provide not just nutrition, but care. It’s a small gesture that can make a big difference in a child’s life.

Working at PAN has allowed me the flexibility to fully engage in these initiatives, even on a national scale. Just last week, I was privileged to participate in one of our sorority’s largest service events in Anaheim, California. Alongside thousands of other members, we packed 20,000 CHIPP™ bags and cuddle kits for vulnerable youth. The cuddle kits were filled with soft blankets and small toys to offer comfort and emotional support to children experiencing trauma or housing insecurity. There’s something powerful about being in a room full of women, all dressed in pink and green, working shoulder to shoulder for a shared purpose. The energy was electric, and the impact was immeasurable.

And this isn’t a one-time thing. Last summer, in Dallas, Texas, we set a Guinness World Record by assembling 8,500 hygiene kits in just one hour. That effort reflected the scale of our commitment, as well as the urgency of the need. For children and families facing daily challenges, something as simple as a toothbrush or a bar of soap can make a huge difference.

These experiences reaffirm why service matters—not just during holidays, but all year long. I’m grateful to work at PAN, which supports community engagement and empowers me to pursue purpose-driven work alongside my professional role. Each employee receives a dedicated day off annually to volunteer, which makes it easier to show up where it counts.

As we look ahead to future holidays, I encourage you to give back by donating food, volunteering, or packing care kits. You could volunteer at a food bank or shelter or write letters to veterans or senior citizens. The options are endless—and it only takes a little effort to get started.

So, when a federal holiday rolls around, I don’t just see it as time off. It is a call to action, a reminder of the work that still needs to be done, and an opportunity to give back to the communities that have shaped me. It’s about honoring the past by serving in the present—and helping build a better future for all of us.
