I loved this post because, when I was interning at a nonprofit two years ago, my favorite project was when I got to create a marketing video of a golf tournament fundraiser we hosted. The great thing about making the video was that it could both serve as an advertisement for people to sign up for the following year, and an appeal to potential donors. One thing I learned from making it that I might add is that, for most videos, keeping them under five minutes is important because you don't want to lose your audience's attention (and we all know how we sometimes have short attention spans when it comes to YouTube!). These are great insights, though, and I never considered using YouTube to analyze demographics. Thanks!

If Thomas wants to use his celebrity to get political and
drive a cause, that’s one thing. In this case he made one blanket statement and
then takes the breakdown of our entire political system out on President Obama.
Not only does it make the team look bad, I would argue it reflects poorly on
Boston and all Bruins fans.

I have always found going to the White House post win imperial and off putting. I personally like that he skipped it, and he has to consider impact on team members.

Hi Julie -- Thanks for reading the post and sharing your thoughts! I certainly agree with you that there maybe is one more bullet point to add there -- not all, but a good percentage of people likely enter politics for the wrong reasons and are therefore more likely than others to find themselves in the midst of PR crises. I have not read All the President's Men, but I'll have to add that one to my list. Thanks for the suggestion!

Great post! I've always found the topic of bad political press fascinating, and it's especially pertinent to the past year, as well as the upcoming election. I think you're right on target with the reasons why politicians attract negative media attention. I'd just like to add, however, that I think another reason is a lot of politicians go into public service to boost their egos, and unfortunately start to think that they can get away with anything (a la Anthony Weiner). I often wondered, when listening to the dodged responses from Weiner and Cain about their crises, if they were listening to their PR advisors at all, since lying and trying to cover up a scandal is the worst thing to do in these situations. I'd also like to recommend one of my favorite books, All the President's Men, about the Watergate scandal, if you haven't read it yet. It touches upon all three of the ideas you outlined but in a much more complex, and dangerously powerful, way (and is also really intriguing!).
