The news today is again about Facebook: they’re launching a new profile redesign again. Even the local Fox channel had a segment about how your profile will change. There are guesses, predictions, leaks, and the whole digital media community is again talking about Facebook changes.
I don’t think it should change. I’m sick and tired of the latest changes and Facebook becoming more intrusive in my life. For 10th time- I don’t want to be friends with your suggested friends list or have you create a friends list for me. And don’t even think about asking me to click on those ads that are so mistargeted.
I completely understand the reason to revamp a product- our technology industry thrives on the latest and greatest. But haven’t we had enough changes with Facebook lately? It’s been only 7 years since I joined the site and it’s completely different– with changes almost weekly. New users (Hi moms, dads & grandparents!) still haven’t fully adapted to the current Facebook model and the basics of how-to use the ever-changing website.
Facebook is rumored to be launching new services in response to Google+. They want to be our one-stop entertainment hub to keep Facebook users on the site longer (i.e. provide high engagement, another sell for Facebook advertisers.) This is great for music lovers but didn’t MySpace try this and fail? Won’t this kill up-and-coming startups that are pushing for sharing music content?
I’m curious to see what the exact changes will be on Thursday but for now, I’ll spend more time on Twitter. Facebook is getting to be too much. I canceled MySpace years ago—maybe that’s next…
